Medical Doorway outreach programme in Hong Kong

Medical Doorway outreach programmes have been reaching out to an increasing number of aspiring medical students. Now, for the first time, this programme has taken us to Asia. Ben Ambrose (Managing Director) was in Hong Kong from 3rd – 8th December to meet with students, parents and career counsellors.

Ben Ambrose visited schools across Hong Kong

As in all developed economies, Hong Kong is dealing with an ageing population and a shortage of health professionals. Medical Doorway’s visit raised awareness of the high quality and world ranked medical, dental and veterinary programmes available in Europe. The Hong Kong outreach project was supported by a number of Medical Doorway universities. Students, parents and schools were keen to find out more about the opportunities on offer. Medical Doorway have already assisted students from Hong Kong enrol at some of Central Europe’s highest ranked medical schools. As a result, we are uniquely placed to provide the full advice and assistance that cannot be provided by student recruitment agencies.

During the week, meetings were held with career counsellors in schools and colleges.

In total, six school presentations were conducted on Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. The aim of the programme was to inform students of the highest ranked universities and how to gain admission to these prestigious programmes. All of the universities presented, provide a pathway to a successful career in Europe, USA, Canada and Hong Kong. In addition to the school visits, Ben Ambrose delivered an open house “Study Medicine or Dentistry in Europe” presentation at the British Council. This presentation focused on the Queen Mary University of London MBBS Malta programme.

Universities such as Charles University First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Hradec Kralove, Masaryk University and Palacky University received a lot of interest. This level of interest was such that Medical Doorway will be conducting entrance examinations in Hong Kong for these universities. In May 2018, we will be welcoming academics and administrators from these universities to Hong Kong to conduct these exams. Hong Kong is also an important regional travel and educational hub. Conducting the Czech exams here means students from mainland China and the surrounding nations will not have to travel to Europe or the UK to gain admission.

Ben also held a meeting with Dalibor Mička (Consul and Deputy Consul General) at the Consulate of the Czech Republic in Hong Kong. During this meeting is was agreed that both parties share the aim of helping more students achieve their study and career aspirations. This joint vision ensures an ethical and effective pathway to a career in medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine, providing peace of mind for students and their families.
