Professional registration after graduation
Whatever your nationality, graduating from one of our partner universities enables you to submit your qualification for assessment by the General Medical Council (GMC) and, where it is accepted, apply for registration with a licence to practise through the route relevant to your circumstances. Medical Doorway helps applicants understand how each programme relates to the GMC's published criteria and which registration route may be relevant, while the final decision rests with the GMC and depends on the graduate's qualification and individual circumstances.
The Medical Licensing Assessment sets a common threshold for safe practice. International graduates who need to take the PLAB test continue to do so, and PLAB is now compliant with the MLA requirements; graduates with a relevant European qualification do not currently need PLAB. Our advisers explain this framework as part of the programme-selection process and direct applicants to the GMC's current PLAB and MLA guidance and criteria for overseas qualifications. As requirements may change during a degree, we also help students identify when updated guidance or direct confirmation from the relevant authority is needed.
