Over 6200 vacancies for doctors in the NHS

The BBC published concerning news (29th February 2016) about the current staff shortages in the NHS. According to the Inside Out programme shown on BBC 1, nearly 70% of NHS trusts are now actively recruiting doctors and nurses from outside the UK to plug a record staffing gap.

The increase in demand for NHS services has created an acute need to increase the number of frontline clinical staff. An increasing and ageing population has meant the NHS is having to cater to a larger number of patients, often with highly complex clinical needs.

The number of vacancies for doctors in England and Wales over the period 2013-2015 has increased by 60%. When one considers the number of training places for doctors in UK universities has not kept up with this increasing demand, this trend is unlikely to change anytime soon. NHS trusts are going to be depending on overseas trained doctors to step up and fill these vacant positions.
