Pleven’s USMLE programme takes a step forward

Medical Doorway this week continued to strengthen our exclusive partnership with Pleven Medical University. Following previous discussions, a meeting was held with Kaplan Medical on introducing the USMLE preparation programme to the university.

During the meeting, Professor Slavcho Tomov (Rector),  Professor Angelina Stoyanova (Vice-Dean of Medicine), Dr Inder Pahal (KAPLAN) and Ben Ambrose (Medical Doorway) discussed the strategy and practicalities for the programme to commence from February 2017.

Once the agreement is concluded, Pleven Medical University will be only the third university in Europe and the only in Bulgaria to have an institutional agreement with Kaplan. The course – the world’s leading USMLE Test Prep programme – utilises a variety of teaching and learning strategies. This empowers students to achieve the best scores possible on the required USMLE steps. High achievement on these exams is essential for students to maximise their career opportunities in the USA. In addition to the USA, the USMLE is recognised in Canada, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Israel, Australia and New Zealand.

The initial plan is for students to gain preferential access to the Kaplan programme from 2017.  In future the plan is for all MU-Pleven international students to be granted access to live teaching.

It is important for students to prepare for the USMLE during their medical training. The USLE Step 1 exam is usually taken after two or three years of medical studies. This is followed by Step 2 Clinical Knowledge and then Step 2 Clinical Skills. Following successful completion of these exams students apply for ECFMG certification. It is then students can apply for residency trying in Americas world class hospitals.

While there is still some work to finalise this agreement, the path is now clear for a launch in 2017.
