Don’t Study Dentistry in Georgia

Over recent weeks, we’ve been inundated with enquiries and applications from students currently enrolled in dentistry programmes in Georgia. After speaking with many of these individuals, a worrying pattern has emerged: almost all have been grossly misled — and in some cases, outright scammed — by fee-charging agents.

Many now find themselves in an extremely precarious position, having unknowingly embarked on a path that may not lead to a viable dental career in the UK.

What’s the Situation with the GDC?

Due to growing concern from students, the General Dental Council (GDC) recently responded to a Freedom of Information request. The response was alarmingly clear: the GDC has no record (on the date of publication) of any graduate from various Georgian universities on its register. Even more concerning, the GDC indicated that graduates from several Georgian universities have not even been assessed as eligible to sit the ORE (Overseas Registration Exam).

This paints a stark picture: many fee-charging agents are simply interested in taking your money, with little to no concern for your long-term career prospects. Basically the advise is don’t study dentistry in Georgia.

Red Flags to Watch Out For

There are some common traits among these fee-charging agents. Being aware of these can help protect you from making a costly mistake:

  1. They downplay the importance of obtaining an EU-recognised qualification.

  2. They claim that studying in Georgia is similar to studying in the EU.

  3. They minimise or ignore the challenges associated with the ORE exam.

  4. They insist on agency fees being paid via bank transfer.

  5. They provide vague or no evidence of successful graduate employment.

Agents who advise students to study dentistry in Georgia know all out the GDC response yet continue to profiteer from unsuspecting students. This is immoral and unethical!

Can I Transfer to Study in the EU?

The good news? If you’re currently studying in Georgia, it’s not too late to make a change — and potentially save your career.

By enrolling in a dentistry programme within the European Union, you’ll gain a qualification that is directly recognised by the GDC. More importantly, these universities have a proven track record of graduate employment.

However, it’s important to note: credits earned in Georgia will not be recognised by EU institutions. If you decide to move, you will need to start the degree from the beginning.
