Back on October 15th 2019 applicants to UK medical schools were unaware of the unprecedented situation that 2020 would bring. All were expecting to complete their last year of school and study for their A-level exams hoping to achieve the A*AA grade requirement. The cancellation of A-level and IB examinations has created a lot uncertainly for this year’s aspiring doctors.
For those still determined to secure a UK medical qualification directly regulated by the GMC there is one opportunity still open. For the past three years, Queen Mary University of London have been teaching from their new campus in Malta.
This is the same degree as awarded by Barts and The London in the UK. Having a UK degree opens up many career pathways for newly qualified doctors. QMUL graduates will be able to apply for a Foundation Doctor position in the UK. Students undertaking the MBBS Malta, will not be disadvantaged when applying for a clinical foundation position in the UK. They will be considered equally as students graduating from other UK medical programmes. The right to work in the UK will depend on immigration rules in place at the time of your graduation and, if required, acquiring the proposed NHS visa. Students who have British Citizenship will already have the right to work in the UK.
