Friday 12th April was an emotional day for the Medical Doorway team but more so for the class of 2019 from Medical University Pleven. Back in February 2013 we were in Pleven supporting our second enrolment of students at this leading Bulgarian university. Six-years later we were back to celebrate their graduation and the start of their medical careers as qualified doctors.

In total, sixty-three students graduated in the class of 2019, forty-two of whom were Medical Doorway students. Due to such a large number of graduates the MU-Pleven Magnum Hall was packed with proud family and friends.

The event commenced with a welcome from Head of the International Student Centre, Professor Angelina Stoyanova. Rector of MU-Pleven, Professor Doctor Slavcho Tomov DSc, delivered the main speech congratulating the students. Professor Tomov reminded them that medicine is a constantly evolving profession with a commitment to lifelong learning.

Every year a select group of the highest achieving students receive “Honours” awarded by the university. This year, thirteen students received this prestigious award of which twelve were Medical Doorway students.

Graduating top of the class was Medical Doorway student Dr Azhar Khan. Dr Khan had the honour of delivering the keynote student speech. This is the second year a Medical Doorway student has graduated top of the class with Dr Sarah Sonde taking the title in 2018. Dr Suprabha Rai delivered a speech highlighting many of the happy and often humours experiences over the six-years in Bulgaria.

Dean of medicine, Prof. Asparuh Nikolaev Asparuhov, led the taking of the Hippocratic Oath. This oath sets out the qualities they are required to follow in their future careers and lives as a member of the medical profession.

Every graduate then took to the stage one by one to receive their Diplomas from Professor Tomov. During this part of the ceremony they were joined on stage by their families and are presented with a white coat. This symbolises the move from being a student to a doctor while also recognising the support, commitment and pride of the families that have been with the students on this long journey to success.

The event closed with a “journey down memory lane” presentation and the traditional tossing of mortar boards. The ceremony was the culmination of a long journey which started with the first enquiry to Medical Doorway. Enrolment in 2013 began the ten semesters of study, a full year of clinical internship and a set of state licensing exams. All of our newly graduating doctors will start the next phase of their professional lives with most taking up positions in the National Health Service.

The Medical Doorway team past and present congratulate our graduates and wish them the best of luck in their future careers. It was an honour to support each and every one of you!
